Curbside Recycling for Edisto?

Edisto Beach Vacation Homes

Whether you visit Edisto from time to time or live there year-round, there’s one thing that we should all care about and that’s the environment.

Currently, there is no curbside recycling program available for residents. While this may seem like something vacationers needn’t worry about, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. In fact, curbside recycling would benefit vacationers just as much as it would residents as they would be able to take advantage of the program (just like they do now with the trash pick-up throughout the week).

The Town of Edisto Beach is polling individuals on its website to see who would be in favor of curbside recycling, which would cost homeowners $6 per month. As of April 5, 58% of those polled are in favor of the proposed plan. Take a look at the poll by visiting townofedistobeach.com and casting your vote.

While curbside recycling would be amazing, bear in mind that recycling is already encouraged on Edisto Beach. Both locals and visitors alike can take advantage of the existing recycling service on Edisto by taking materials to the convenience station located at city hall (same place where you go to refill your water jugs).

The convenience station is open from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, 1:30 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Keep in mind that glass, plastic, paper, cardboard and aluminum cans can be brought to the station 24 hours a day, but an attendant will not be on the premises.

Remember that recyclables should be clean as any waste mixed in with the items causes the entire load to be sent to a landfill.

In related news, the town is currently considering a $1.50 fee for rolling back trash cans after trash pick-up. Current ordinances require trash cans to be rolled back under beach houses after trash has been collected. Those who do roll their cans back would be able to opt out of the $1.50 fee.

Word to the wise: Leave a sign in a visible area for renters if you are a homeowner. That way vacationers will know to roll back trashcans after use. This not only makes the streets look better, but helps cut down on some of the critters that get into the trash (raccoons like shrimp just as much as you do).
