2013 Edisto Beach Christmas Parade
One of the most beloved traditions on the island is the Edisto Beach Christmas parade.
The theme this year is Edisto Holiday Cheer and groups and organizations of all types will participate with cleverly-decorated floats.
The parade begins at 2 p.m. December 14 and anyone in the area is encouraged to come out to watch from the sidewalks along Palmetto Boulevard from the 100-600 block. The parade begins at the 600 block and makes it way down to the 100 block so that onlookers get plenty of time to feast their eyes upon the festive scene.
Every year the parade is different, but its always highly entertaining. Some of the best floats that Ive ever seen while watching the parade include the bright pink set up created by the Edisto Belles, the dressed up humans and dogs that make up Animal Lovers of Edisto K9 Rescues contribution, and the float featuring the stuffed heads of hunted animals that one local hunting organization put together. (Ill admit that last one was a little sad and not very Christmas-like, but the heads were at least wearing Santa caps).
The Christmas parade is definitely a family-friendly event and children in attendance will love that many participants throw candy from their floats. Just try not to get in the way of the procession while collecting goodies.
Later on that same day, the boat parade will make a splash at 5 p.m. down in Big Bay Creek. Many area boaters get together, decorate their boats, and then cruise down the creek to bring a little holiday cheer to the marsh.
Watch the boat parade from the Thirsty Fish or Dockside bar and restaurant.
The street parade happens rain or shine, but sometimes Mother Nature does not cooperate and the boat parade is unable to commence.
If youre not familiar with weather this time or year, it is generally cooler and sometimes chilly but temperatures should be in the 50s during the daytime. Hopefully the skies are clear so that both parades can go off without a hitch. However, dont hesitate to put on a poncho or pop open an umbrella and watch the floats.
